Local Plumber Founds Company in 1900

In 1900, Max Gundlach Jr. founded Gundlach’s Plumbing with his partner A.C. Wroot. Specializing in plumbing repair, this was the beginning of the Gundlach’s Plumbing & Sheet Metal company that we know today. The repair shop, located on the corner of 20th and Chester in Bakersfield, operated under the name Gundlach & Wroot. It wouldn’t be another 30 years until the company acquired the name Gundlach’s Plumbing & Sheet Metal.

In the past 121 years, Gundlach’s Plumbing & Sheet Metal has grown from a small plumbing repair shop to the local Bakersfield plumber and HVAC specialist we know today. This didn’t happen overnight. Instead, it required steady growth throughout the years based on hard work and professionalism. The timeline for Gundlach’s looks something like this:

• 1900 – Gundlach & Wroot was founded as a small plumbing repair shop.
• 1927 – Rees Jones bought into the business and helped to expand its services to include sheet metal work.
• 1930 – The business is officially renamed Gundlach’s Plumbing & Sheet metal Co. Ltd.
• 1934 – Air conditioning services are added when Cecil and Lee Jones decide to join their father’s business.
• 1941 – Max Gundlach passes away and his widow sells her part of the business to the Jones family.
• 1950’s & 1960’s – Gundlach’s becomes one of the most reputable and largest mechanical contractors in Bakersfield.
• 1985 – The company decides to focus on servicing and remodeling work for plumbing and air conditioning, and discontinues sheet metal work.
• 2004 – Gundlach’s is purchased by Ken and Shelly Wonderly from Trent and Jennifer Jones.
